Docusate Sodium is a stool softener which makes bowel movements softer and easier to pass. It is commonly used to alleviate symptoms of occasional constipation and  irregularity. Docusate Sodium is effective but gentle and typically works within 12-72 hours of dosing. It is the preferred remedy for constipation in pregnancy since stimulants or laxatives should be used with caution (Bisacodyl, Senna) or avoided altogether (Castor Oil , Mineral Oil or Aloe Vera) since uterine contractions may result. While increasing fluid intake and dietary fiber are helpful to prevent constipation, a stool softener is often needed as well to reduce pain and prevent rectal damage and hemorrhoids caused by hard stools or straining. The recommended dosage is 100mg orally once or twice daily as needed with a maximum dose of 400mg/day. The use of mineral oil is contraindicated with docusate sodium. When used in recommended doses, docusate sodium is not expected to cause any negative effects to the growing fetus.

I love this new brand that has all the products that are considered safe during pregnancy- wish it was around during my first pregnancy. this product is crushable so I don’t need to swallow yet another pill!
