If you’re pregnant, these symptoms can even feel even more uncomfortable and while pregnant. you’re limited in what medications you can use for allergy relief. Meeting with your care provider first can help guide you in the right direction for some welcome allergy relief.

Need some direction?

We’ve got you, mama.

We put together a list of tips and alternatives to help you find some welcome allergy relief.

Saline

A dry, scratchy nose or congestion can really put a damper on your day. Nasal saline or a salt water solution for your nasal passages is an easy way to get some relief. Not to be confused with nasal steroids, this saline rinse clears nasal passages and keeps them hydrated. A few sprays can help you blow away the allergens that accumulate in your nose and is completely safe for both mom and baby!

Steam Therapy

Congestion can be unbearable! If you’re feeling super congested but want to avoid taking medication, some steam therapy might be a sigh of relief. Run a hot shower and sit in the bathroom to let the steam hydrate nasal passages to help you breathe. For some concentrated steam, add some boiling water to a bowl and a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil or peppermint oil. Lean over the bowl and drape a towel over your head to trap the steam. The essential oil and steam will break up your congestion and hydrate dry throat and nasal passages. Steam is gentle and works alongside your body’s natural craving for hydrated air.

Air Purifier

Keeping the allergens outside where they belong can also bring some welcome relief. Running your air conditioner helps keep those outdoor allergens out of your living space. An air purifier can also attract these allergens to keep them at bay and reducing your symptoms. Having an air purifier in your bedroom at night can help you get a better night’s sleep and improve the quality of the air in your house.

Avoid Decongestants

Decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine can be dangerous for expectant mothers. Many common drug store decongestants have been correlated with certain birth defects in babies and many care providers recommend avoiding decongestant products during the first trimester of your pregnancy.
The best defense against allergies is to avoid your triggers, but that can be easier said than done.

If you’re suffering from seasonal allergies, there’s plenty of relief that’s safe for mom and baby. Talking to your doctor about your symptoms and options available to you can help you find the right over-the-counter relief when you need it.
